I had the pleasure of travelling up to northern Ontario in July of 2010. We travelled to a small community called Birch Hill. It is a native reserve and although I haven’t seen many, this place was spectacular. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I wouldn’t believe Ontario actually had hills. The people there were so friendly, so eager to welcome us ad involve us in their daily activities. This might sound boring at first, but these people travel approximately 2 minutes to the local dock where they jump onto their boat and you can literally travel for hours in any direction amidst a lush green hilly landscape.
At one point, we left a local dock, travelled by boat for a half hour and docked upon an unassuming shore. From there we hiked 15 minutes to get to my photo. It was described to me as the best kept secret in northern Ontario; the water is beautiful, blue and undisturbed. I thought it fitting that the native community should inherit so beautiful a place. They have clearly kept it clean and treated it with the delicacy it deserves. The gentleman in the photo is a native friend of mine who travelled up there with me, and I thought it fitting to post a photo with him in it. This is his land, and I’m very glad I was able to share in the experience.
