The love story between Romeo and Juliet was immortalized by Shakespeare. Verona holds the claim to having the houses of perhaps the greatest lovers in history. Although there is much debate as to whether the lovers even existed, this doesn’t stop thousands of tourists from wanting to visit Casa di Giulietta. So, there I stood in line to visit the famous courtyard that was home to a bronze Juliet and her balcony. When I was told that having a photograph taken of you holding the breast of the bronze Giulietta in one’s hand meant good luck in love, I had to do this myself.
The passage way leading to the little and slightly disappointing square where the balcony is located was a tribute to love notes. Over time people have filled the walls with graffiti and gum to stock love notes and messages. There were thousands of notes and letters in almost every language and from lovers of many ages; some written by teenagers in the throes of a first crush or by adults celebrating a life-time love.
When I finally got into the courtyard, Juliet was surrounded by hundreds of people fighting to get to her breast. Her right breast was so worn out it was a flat and shiny A-cup in comparison to her left breast. I looked up at the balcony and there stood a young girl shouting out over the crowds, “Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo? Deny thy father, and refuse thy name”. We all exchanged cameras to get pictures with Juliet’s boob and our love struck smiles and got out of there. Whether or not any of us were lucky in love is still a mystery…
